I don't see that as a necessary condition. Quite the opposite really. As you wrote elsewhere in this thread: "As for the academics in the database field, I think that (1) those interested in theory and foundations are few".
I suspect (on the basis of nothing more than intuition) that this group worked (briefly) only because there were few enough participants of any type that the worst imbeciles could be engaged and points made, and be seen to be made.
There is no good reason why the ideas discussed here couldn't be discussed on LinkedIn or similar. But any good points would be diluted to homepathic concentrations owing to the vastly greater number of resolutely ignorant participants there.
In fact, maybe that is just what happens.
