Back on topic, maybe an initiative to host a more accessible, web-based, platform (e.g., https://github.com/discourse/discourse), might help gather more people and revive discussions.
IMHO, for that to work, two conditions should be satisfied:
- it should be promoted by a reputable institution (say, a university);
- it should be given suitable publicity, say in database conferences, in other mailing lists, as footnotes in call for papers, ...
Personally, I wish I could read (and post to) online discussions where the authors of the scientific papers I read are involved.
I don't know how much interest or motivation there is, though.
