I know DBA's have had problems with bringing oracle up after it was brought down by force. You may want to talk to a more senior DBA, as I am a developer. I know individual schemes can go down, especially if there was sork going on in them when the crash happens. I also know if Oracles program files become damaged that is it you have to reinstall. Also there are the internal tables that Oracle keeps, you cannot bring up a healthy database if there are any problems with these tables, but there is an admin mode you can go into to fis them.
