I had this happen today at work, we aren't using archivelog mode. The problem we had was the system crashed, due to another problem, and when we brought it back up I couldn't get Oracle started. (We have two separate sids running.)
What I did was a shutdown abort, then when I did the startup it said the instance was started and the database mounted. It took about 10 minutes for one sid to come up, but the other took nearly 3/4 of an hour before it was available. I had had this happen in the past, so I knew it could take a while for the database come up.
I once had one sid take over an hour to come up, so you probably should be patient and wait it out. (Remember this is in no archivelog mode. If you're archiving it could possibly be waiting for another archive log.)
