 TITLE: Scientist Assistant

        Argonne National Laboratory
        Decision and Information Sciences Division
        Advanced Computer Applications Center

 Argonne National Laboratory has an immediate opening in the Chicago Area  for several innovative, dedicated, product-oriented database professionals.  

 BASIC PURPOSE:    To assist the Information Management Systems Section Manager to specify,  design, develop, test and document prototypes and production systems for  the Department of Energy and other sponsors.  

 TYPICAL ACTIVITIES:  

  1. Identifies functional requirements for software development projects, and produces corresponding data models. 30%
  2. Researches, creates and documents designed databases. 20%
  3. Implements computer software in accordance to requirements and design documents, and tests results. 40%
  4. Evaluates data base management systems. 5%
  5. Documents user instructions, data descriptions and schemas. 5%

 All activities will be executed in compliance with ES&H responsibilities  established by Argonne National Laboratory's ES&H policies, work rules,  and safe practices as they apply to work performed by self or personnel  under supervision.    

 WORK ENVIRONMENT    Typical office/laboratory setting but with extended hours and travel.  Reports to the manager of Information Management Systems.  

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE  

  1. Considerable skills in the design and implementation of databases using the relational and/or object-oriented model
  2. Considerable understanding of the object oriented paradigm.
  3. Considerable skill in programming in C and C++, or equivalent OO language.
  4. Considerable skill using standard software database management system packages and products, preferably Unix-based.
  5. Good understanding of the fundamentals of text retrieval.
  6. Good skill using the INGRES relational database management system package, or equivalent.
  7. Good skill using the INGRES Windows/4GL development package, or equivalent.
  8. Good skill using the Versant object database management system package, or equivalent.
  9. Good skill using the Verity Topic text retrieval system package, or equivalent.
  10. Good knowledge of the software life cycle, preferably using CASE.
  11. Considerable skills using the UNIX operating system.
  12. Good skills in using personal and/or workstation computers.
  13. Good skills in organization and personal productivity.
  14. Good skills in oral and written communication.

 This requisite level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved athrough a  B.S. or equivalent in computer science and at least 2 years of experience.
