Besides what Daniel said, be sure the ORACLE_SID is the same case everywhere it is defined. Also, get on metalink.oracle.com and look for documents that explain common errors setting up unix installations, especially shared memory segments.

Also, do an ipcs|grep ora to see if perhaps you have used up shared segments by trying to startup over and over.
