Our largest datafiles are 250MB in size. I only create them in sizes of 50, 100 or 250MB. My reasoning is:

  1. I was told ORACLE does not recommend that you create a datafile greater than 500MB in size,
  2. Datafiles that are much bigger than 250MB are hard to manage (i.e. backup/restore/move to another disk) during recovery.
