If you use Oracle's rman it can back up the blocks that were changed since a particular backup.

I have a basic (possible) questions related to backups of oracle databases.
I am working to reduce the amount of data we backup on our system computers. We perform weekly cold backups and hot backups on daily bases and we have a number of databases to backup.   Here is a questions:

a.. Is there a way to check anything on the system that shows if any updates happen on the database within the last X amount of time? If yes, could you please explain?
Here an example: A database XYZ is backed (cold) up on Sunday night. On Monday schedule, a job runs prior to hot backup that checks arc and redo logs for any information that will indicate that there were a database change. If change found a hot backup is taken, otherwise the scheduled job completes successful.
Any suggestion will be greatly accepted and appreciated. Please replay as an e-mail on this account.

  Thanks
