I recently ran into a problem with using the design editor of designer
2.1.2. Switching between Layout and Data view of a module led to an enormous
increase of some of my register branch

This seems to be a bug.
You can test if this bug also applies to your case by creating a new nt-user
(thereby using a new current_user entry in the register), logging in as this
new user and triying modiying the e/r diagram again.
