Carlos,

I couldn't resist the will-O-buy-Borland? troll <g>.

I can't help you with the D2k-vs-Delphi question, but I *can* tell you that you should keep an eye on Power Objects. I'm not surprised that version 1.0 didn't attract a lot of mission-critical work. It is, after all, v1 - and Oracle carefully positioned it away from that market. However, v2.0 will be out this November with a much-improved PO-Lite in the box.

I'm in the beta program. From what I've seen, OPO v2 should stand up nicely to VB for database apps, particularly if there is any degree of cross-platform support required. There are going to be shops this time around who see this product as a must-have.

A lot of developers are very fond of Delphi, just as a lot of developers are very fond of D2k - it's come a long way. They're both fine tools, but both appeal to developers who'd prefer not to work with BASIC.

Many developers and shops *do* prefer to work with BASIC. IMHO, neither Delphi nor D2k can 'kill' VB. All these two can do is provide an alternative that some in the market will welcome. OPO is the alternative for shops that build database apps and want to stay with BASIC. Oracle didn't do itself any favors in this by allowing so much time to pass between v1 and v2, but I think most of the problems that caused that delay are over. The pace of releases should pick up noticeably in '97.

So is it likely that Larry E. will buy Borland? When for a fraction of the cost Oracle can keep developing OPO and fight fire with fire? Naahh...

Cheers!
