I don't know anything about Informix, but there are a few questions that
you need to ask before you can begin the installation of Oracle.
- What pieces of Oracle are you installing? SQL*Net v.2.x can be troublesome, especially if you've never done it before. What about Parallel Server, Distributed Server, ...?
- What media do you have Oracle on? CD-ROMs are faster than tapes, but require a loading area.
- Is the space on the disk(s) already set up with filesystems?
- Are you going to have to put a few databases out there as part of the installation and, if so, has space been allocated and prepared for you (as in #3)?
There are many more questions that answering will help in figuring out how much time to allot. If you've never done it before and you're doing an installation of the normal RDBMS and SQL*Net v.2.x and you're filesystems have been prepared for you, my guess is at least 2 days. If you don't plan well, you can run into space problems and have to install and re-install many times before getting it done properly.
Best bet is read up on the Installation manual and answer as many questions as you can beforehand. If you don't know the OS, make sure you have OS support immediately during the installation. Same with Network if you are installing SQL*Net.
Good luck,
