I figured it out!
When I ran the installer from a X-Window emulator PC, the error
message changed (I had previously ran it at the system console).
It displayed a set of terminal types that should be defined for
$ORACLE_TERM. The ICG book said I had a choice of hpterm or vt100,
so I set it to hpterm. BUT hpterm is not accepted by orainst.
When I changed it to hp (or any vt320 ...), it worked both from
the console and the X-Window emulator PC.
