The cheapest solution for getting X-server running on PC is using bootable Linux disks that load standalone Linux OS and X-server without using any hard disk. As you might propably know, Linux is free software.

I have tried it and got Linux X-server running on my PC (486) without installing any software in my hard disk. You only would need two 1.44 HD floppies to boot Linux+server.

This is not exactly a Windows solution but can be used in temporary solution for example for Reports/Forms development using X-executables.

I loaded the Linux SW from a finnish anonymous ftp -server. Unfortunately my brains freeze at this point and can't remember the site or directories. The X-server software was called something like Xdenu.
