We are fortunate to have a system to copy our database to across the net. We run in archivelog mode. We backup 1 gig across the net in about 25 minutes to the second machines disks. Later we dump these to tape.

Perhaps you can schedule the big databases to be backed up across the net and then make either dd images of the disks (1 hour per gig) or use the UNIX dump command (unknown how long this will take.)
