(the error had something to do with ORACLE_SID case matching in a shell script, from what I could determine after several hours of trouble-shooting -- I tried at least twice over a period of months to bring this problem to support's attention with no success).

However -- :-; the output from Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) "Object ... Create Report ... Database Configuration Report" has proved to be almost as useful in many TAR situations.
