As Van tried to point out:
you'll need to create a separate (small) instance to store the RMAN
database, otherwise you will face -as you do now- the chicken and egg
problem: you can't operate on a database you are connected to. The same
equally applies to OEM, I usually set up one database for
- OEM - Names Server (when necessary) - and now RMAN
