Oracle does not have a binary data type. You have a few options... use integers and write your own bit operators...or build a varchar2 column wide enough. However, it takes up basically as much space to have a varchar2(5) as 5 varchar2(1) and the logic is a lot simpler with 5 varchar2(1) columns.
