These things don't have to be mutually exclusive. Since the position is a Sr. DBA position (which requires taking over databases with very little 'training' time), I'd require someone with both experience, theoretical knowledge, eagerness to learn, eagerness to share the knowledge, being a bit of a 'hacker' when absolutely necessary (being able to patch together a temporary solution).
Other people think that I am picky, but 100K is not that bad of a salary, even in NYC, and IO and CPU are usually the biggest bottlenecks in the database, and I'd expect an experienced DBA to have a clue about the likely causes and likely solutions, instead of digging for them for hours/days.
Obviously we look for other (non-technical) traits, but there has to
be some technical screening first, as a good DBA should have some
grasp on Oracle internals.
