The DBA team is normally responsible for database Backups and Recoveries.

In fact, backup and recovery is one of the most important duties if a DBA. Yet, so many DBAs often found themselves in last-gasp efforts, escalating a call to Oracle Worldwide support for a severity-one database down issue. To survive such a scenario, a DBA is expected to:

  • plan his backup strategies and test all disaster recovery procedures.
  • trying out different database crash and recovery scenarios before production migration.
  • document backup and recovery strategies.

In some situations the customer may event have a penalty clause in their contract: "IF THE DATABASE IS DOWN FOR TWO HOURS OR MORE, THE CONSULTING ORGANIZATION IS LIABLE FOR X AMOUNT OF DOLLARS FOR EVERY ONE HOUR SUBSEQUENT DOWN TIME".
