I think you should have resisted. Rows do not have columns. Tables have columns, as well as rows.
The intersection of a row and a column holds a single value. I've seen this called a cell or a field. I've also seen it called a "value", but I think that's unfortunate.
In any event, a column is more than a field. A set of values can be held in a column, one value for each row.

I see your point on this one, but I also see Joe's point. In a newsgroup, there is very little other than the words used in a message to tell the group what the writer is thinking.
