The subject could be explored, can I say that the field of artificial intelligence uses languages such as Scheme and prolog to do very interesting things with data structures, some have grown out of designing data bases.
If you read summaries about projects with prolog you will find teams that are funded to develope applications and not affraid to ask questions that look at relationships between a bear and a plane.
