Malcolm,
Relieved to hear it.
As for Unix Admin, well I look after all IT here. Unix/Informix and the Application that runs on it, The NT Servers, the Phone System, our VPN, just everything.
In SMEs', certainly here in the UK I don't believe this situation is unusual.(??) How many SMEs' could afford more than one IT pro? Some (foolishly) don't have any, relying on off-site support only. This is one reason I find these listings so useful. I can't be "expert" in all the things I'm responsible for. And anything like onmonitor that allows quick and easy access to the Admin functions is good for me. They can expand it as much as they like. I use SCOAdmin, and a Webui for our VPN and User Admin on NT, etc. etc. Anyone out there feeling ashamed of using such tools should relax. Whilst I have nothing but admiration for those who can do everything from the command line, I can't. I use the command line when it's faster, safer or better. (And I'm very careful about Syntax!!!)
Regards,
Malcolm

Malcolm That makes two Malcolm's who use it! And it is probably because DBA isn't your only function. And just imagine how many Oracle systems have part-time DBAs. I know of many sites where the Unix Admin does Informix DBA in their spare time. And most of them use onmonitor. They might use a few extra onstats occasionally, and could probably do with some extra displays, but really they don't need much more. I never understand why Informix haven't modified onmonitor to compile it through 4Js and provide multiple versions that can be used in different ways. It's basically a 4GL forms based program. regards Malcolm -----Original Message----- From: Malcolm Garbett [mailto:malcolm.g_at_newall.co.uk] Sent: 02 December 2002 08:50 To: 'informix-list_at_iiug.org' Subject: RE: Informix/Oracle comparison on Data Storage terminology Hi, I have more than a month's experience, use onmonitor all the time and I'm not ashamed to admit it! (I ALWAYS use it to stop and restart the engine, for example.) Whether this is because DBA is only one of many IT hats I wear, or some other reason, I must leave others to judge. Does anyone with more than one month's experience actually use onmonitor? (Except to check the logging status of a database - never worked out how to do that otherwise ...)
