I just recently encoutered this message while attempting to use a stored procedure inside a form. However, the procedure was doing several rdbms_ouput statements for debugging purposes. This caused problems since Oracle doesn't like the idea of a function used in a select updating tables. All because because the writes to the buffer was considered an update when in fact the function was just to query data.
