Mike, are you sure that your performance problems stem from your architecture? A lot of so-called "fat client" problems disappear with a simple switch to a better-performing client-side tool. In many cases, moving to a 3-tier architecure without changing the way the code is executed will actually slow an application down. A lot of VB and Powerbuilder shops are learning that lesson as we speak. As easy application partitioning becomes commonplace, the use of the term "fat client" is likely to greatly diminish.
