you'll find the 'dead connection detection' feature really isn't all it can be until net 2.3, which should be available to you now. then set the 'expire_time' to a reasonable period in the _server's_ sqlnet.ora file. there is no reason why you can't upgrade to net 2.3 while using your current kernel version. just make sure net is configured for the new version and start the 2.3 listener.
