Retrieving length of data in LONG RAW column

Can anyone tell me the best way using PRO/C to find out the size of the data that was written to a LONG RAW column?

The only way I know to do it currently is to allocate an insufficient amount of space in the select descriptor and fetch. Once the fetch is executed, Oracle will tell you that there was data truncation and tell you how many bytes were needed. Then you can reallocate the descriptor space to that size and have at it again.

This seems like a real pain. Is there a better way?
