Derek, the OpenLink Driver (MultiTier) will certainly rid you of any problems with SQL*NET that you are experiencing - we don't use SQL*NET, but to be honest, the problems you are outlining appear to stem either from an installation problem or a network problem. Can you confirm that you have a Kosher installation (i.e. no corruption of files etc.) You might want to re-install the database to just see if anything went awry there. An intermittent connection via SQL*Plus sounds real strange, not something I have ever come across before.
