Questions concerning Oracle and ODBC

I recently downloaded the Oracle 7 Workgroups server (free trial) to analyze the differences between it and MS SQL Server. However, I'm having a bunch of problems. SQL Plus only lets me log into the created database at random times. It otherwise posts a variety of errors. Same when I try and go through ODBC. Does the actual product perform this way? Is there anything I can do to rid myself of this problem?
