I don't know if this helps... but we had exactly the same problems with the machines having the amount of memory you were recommended to obtain. Oracle Corp was of little help in this matter.

We dropped OR2.5. We didn't have time to find another tool. Instead we re-did all our fancy reports with SQL*PLUS running on the server, captured the output in files and displayed the files on the client with a basic freeware text editor (PFE). We saved a lot of time and aggivation. The reports run dependably, faster and you can view many at the same time.

We are running client server and sharing data files (written in Unix/read in Windows) using LANMAN.

Best decision ever taken on this team was to drop Oracle Reports!
