With UNIX OS, as root user you will be able to kill any process with the kill -9 option.

Unless absolutely necessary, you should not shutdown Oracle with the abort option. You can achieve the same effect (kill active Oracle sessions) with shutdown immediate option. Abort may cause unrecoverable db corruption.

Just remember one thing, in order to do a successfull cold backup, the db must be shutdown with normal option only.
