Chuck,

If you are (or think you are) a master programmer then hands down go for Application Development.

If you're a jack of all trades, don't mind working all hours, love discovering new techniques and technology, thrive under pressure when the heats on, then go for DB Administration.

If you're a proactive DBA, life these days can be fairly diverse including Data Modelling, Database and System Design and now to a much larger extent Networking and Communications.

Pay scales I would assume are probably indirectly proportional to your negotiating skills.
