Don't. Archive to a different disk than your database files are on. That way, if you lose the database disk, you can get the archived log files back quickly once you've restored your original offline backup. Plus, if your database is ever busy enough for LGWR to switch to a logfile group that hasn't been completely archived yet, your database will hang up until archiving completes. Not nice, I think. You could also let yourself in for an unpleasant experience if you're changing the tape cartridge at precisely the wrong moment!

It isn't difficult to set up a scheme to copy archive log files to tape from disk every now and again and delete them from the disk...
