You can get this error if your DISPLAY variable is not set, or is set to a device which you do not have permission to display on. (Try starting a xterm to see if you DISPLAY variable is set correctly)

Possibly, you are displaying on another device ? I.e. the DISPLAY variable is not set correctly.
