SQL*NET troubles....V1 -> V2

Could anyone give me a pointer or two on this one. I'm going quietly insane with what must be the most obvious problem ever.....?

I've set up a 7.0.15 instance on a Sun running SunOS 4.1.3 with both V1 and V2 SQL*Net. Now, I want to connect to the v.7 instance from another machine using V1. I've set up /etc/services, run 'checkTCP' and re-linked the Oracle kernel using ?/rdbms/lib/oracle.mk, then rerun 'checkTCP'.

That's OK.

Now when I log into the other machine, setup my TWO_TASK and run SQL*Plus ( from v.6 ), I get the ubiquitous:

	ORA-1034: ORACLE not available
	ORA-7429(I think?): Failed to attach segment......

which is truly bizarre. The v.7 instance is *definitely* available, I've checked.

Now, going back to the machine the instance is on, running SQL*Plus is fine. But the minute I do it with a connect string, it does the same as above.

Any pointers? I know it's extremely obvious..........But I'll be damned if I can spot it!

Thanks.
