Hear, hear!

I endured a siege of endless debate and whining from the sysadmin group when I first arrived here (they hadn't had a 'real' DBA before, just someone who knew a lot of UNIX that supported them remotely.)

Anyone that thinks a sophisticated system like Oracle compares with some plug-and-play app like Lotus 1-2-3 really needs some serious education.

I wouldn't classify Oracle as application software. An analogy I found useful in trying to educate higherups is to compare Oracle to where CICS and IMS fall in the IBM pantheon of systems software.
