It is definitely platform dependent and to a more limited extent application dependent. Sometimes the perceived gain comes as you state from the defragmentation acheived by the export/import.
On a Sun system the benefits, both positive and negative, come from the OS page cache. Sometimes this gets in the way a little, sometimes it is a positive help.
User need to decide whether they need or desire the flexibility of the file system against the performance of raw disk.
