Normalization and Performance

My boss doesn't believe that a normalized database will not necessary improve the performance of the Embedded SQL program. He wants me to write down guidelines to normalize database design to improve performance. I hope that some of you can send me some comments on this topic. I remember I have read some articles in the Database programming and design magazines on these topics but I cannot remember the name of the articles. Please help (send email to kevin\_at_if.com).
