The following comments is based on my experience on Oracle 6.0.30,Pro*C 1.3, SQL*NET TCP/IP and Informix 5.0,ESQL/C,ISTAR TCP/IP on a 3B2 600G platform running UNIX System V 3.2.2.

  1. Oracle adminstration is much harder than Informix's. In Informix, the utility tbmonitor, tbstat, tbmode are really helpful to adminstrate and monitor the database activities. In Oracle, the utility monitor only provides DBA information on the database activites. DBA has to perform all adminstration on the command line.
  2. If a user want to create multiple databases in a machine, it is easy to do it in Informix. Alter database information (drop table, drop column, alter column definition, etc) is easier in Informix too.
  3. In Pro*C, there are much more options to choose when you compile a pcc i program. It is much more straight forward in ESQL/C compliation. However, the syntax in Oracle is more ANSI compliant than Informix's. If you like standard, Oracle is your choice.
  4. Oracle is a better relational DB product. Oracle DBMS is developed to include most of the concepts included in the ANSI '89 and '92 standard (e.g. referential integrity). The new version of Informix tries to catch up.
  5. Oracle has long defined VARCHAR as a structure. Informix has yet to implement that until version 5.0
  6. The October 12 issue of PC magazine conclude that the performance of Oracle is much better than Informix in the magazine's testing platform.
  7. However, Informix is much cheaper than Oracle. From my experience, the price of Informix software is about 70% that of Oracle.

Time to stop. Bye!
