fetch across commits

In Pro*C for Oracle7 a fetch can be intermixed with an update by not using the CURRENT OF clause (p 6-13 of the Prog Guide to the Precompilers).
Is this valid in version 6 (specifically v6.0.36) as well? I had a look at the v6 doco we have here, but I couldn't see a similar section titled "Fetching Across COMMITs".
Does anyone know when this capability came into Oracle?
