COUNT_QUERY - SQL*FORMS 3.0

I have a block that develops a very complex query. (includes dynamic sorting, and user
queries differently each time they
user screen).
How do I tell the user how many records will be pulled up, if I can't just put a steady "same ol" query statement.
How does COUNT_QUERY work? I know its a restricted procedure....
How does everyone else solve this?
