Developer 2000 easy LOV question

(i.e the list pops up when the cursor enter the text field) except when I choose a value from the pop-up LOV, the value does not transfer to my text field. Instead, the LOV goes away and the bell rings because I have not entered a value into a required field. I have gone over and over the Proper Palettes for both my LOV and my text Item.
Any Ideas why my LOV does not work?
