Welcome to the 90's. It is a trade off. We now get better efficiencies but there is more to know. I can build a very complex system in little time but I need a team of 4 people to do ANYTHING. If you are in a world where you want to build soup to nuts in a one person shop then maybe Oracle is not the best environment. However, I would rather put out my eyes with a sharp poker than work in VB against SQLServer.
