Discoverer 3.0 weak on sums

The following is true for Discoverer 3.0.7 on Windows NT but is probably true in general:

When a user creates a summary line, he/she must choose to either summarize "all data points" or exactly ONE. This means he/she cannot create a summary line for a subset of the columns. Additionally, the "all data points" option only creates a summary for crosstab sheets, which further restricts the summary lines the user can create when using a table (rather than crosstab) layout.

Does anyone know a way around this?
