You should not set up *new* databases in a desupported version of
Oracle. The only reason to retain desupported versions is vendors
unwilling to upgrade their product.
Your problem would be extinct in Oracle 9i and higher, where you can
backup to database, and backup the resulting backupsets to tape.
Yet another reason to dump the 8.1.6 crap asap.
If management doesn't want to dump the 8.1.6 crap you should be
looking out for a new job, that is: before they fire you when they
decide to discontinue Oracle, because you are lightyears behind, and
you will suffer from it, as the world has moved on.
