This sounds like you copied all files while the prod db was open - not the best idea perhaps?
And what was the reason to change the SID in the first place? Don't blame the dba for trying to accomplish what you asked for

Is the production database in NOARCHIVELOG?

Start out fresh by rebuilding the database from a proper backup. The RMAN Users Guide contains some valuable information on how to duplicate a database.

And the exact procedure will differ depending on your OS *and* Oracle Version which you deliberately didn't mention.
