Studying 8i won't lead you in the wrong direction! Oracle 9 isn't a completely different animal than Oracle 8. What you knew about Oracle 7 didn't became worse with Oracle 8. What you know about Oracle 8 doesn't become worse with Oracle 9. Sure some features become obsolete and there's a whole bunch of new stuff, but the main part of your knowledge remains valid.
