Don't know what you did wrong, but:

My experiences:
Oracle 8.0.4 on Windoze NT4 Server - 20 minutes Oracle 8.0.5 on Red Hat 6.x - about an hour (haven't gone to 7.0 yet, but can't foresee the level of problems you indicate)
Oracle 8.1.6 on Tru64 - about 3 hours
