I'm actually exploring this myself at the moment. One way is to use external

procedure in Oracle 8 - see meta-link or technet.oracle.com You can configure Oracle to call C code in the OS, which in turn can call the Operating System. You can therefore
have a trigger page you, e-mail you etc., Another option is pipes, which people
have suggested here before. I'm looking into that right now.
