I should add that there seem to be some security problems with allowing full access to the whole box with external procedures. On one article I found, it recommended starting a different listener for extproc, the external procedure executable, that would run as a different user with more restricted rights. After all, it would be possible to delete your whole database from a trigger if you were inclined to test the limits of a this potentially circuitous feature.
