I agree with everything said. They Say the Enterprise Server (as compared
to the JUST Server) has all these advanced features ( i.e. Partitioning
etc..).
As the DBA people come up to me ask how can something be done better w/
Oracle and I give
a solution and have to say "Well it's going to cost you $$$$" they say "We
have the
Enterprise Server edition!" I say "Ya but each option costs you extra"
they say
" OK how much?" I say "Well we have a 300 user licensee and its like a
couple of hundred $$$'s
per user , that 'll be $60,000" They walk away saying what in the
HE(DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS)
are we buying the Enterprise Edition for?
Oh ya! I was interested in getting their performance packs and they priced
those a couple hundred
$$$'s per user license. I got a price quote for all three packs of
$150,000. When asked
why they price it that way they say everybody benefits from the from the
feature or piece of software
so they're going to charge for each user license. Where do some of the
medium and large shops get the $$$$ for Oracle extra's .
I argued with our Oracle support guy for 15 minutes telling him I had
support for the Enterprise
Edition based on our contract ( he was asking for some more $$$$ to get
the next
version up from where we were at on NT . We have the Enterprise Edition on
Unix already).
He said "Oh Ya you do have support", then I asked what 's the difference,
thinking I was getting a better product w/ the Enterprise Edition, he said
" Well you get extras like table partitioning etc.. "
Yadda, yadda.....
BULL@#%&. Oracle is gouging, and they better watch out. I have a stake in
making
Oracle work as the DBA, but I'm also learning other databases and finding
out some things can be done just as well on another venders database. I use
to be ORACLE IS THE SOLUTION
guy. Now, I've put in them in the IF YOU GOT BIG BUCKS category.
I'm also am getting sick of these advanced features they tout like if you
have Oracle
running at your shop "Stick with us because this feature is coming"
, later you find out it cost ya.
You pay big bucks to bring Oracle into your shop, and it just gets my craw
when these
advanced features come out they can't be more reasonably priced.
Enough.
